الرهانات هي آليات الثقة التي من خلالها يقوم طرفان أو أكثر في عملية بتأمين الأموال في الضمانة ويحدد كل منهما شروطًا محددة تحتها يوافق على إطلاق الأموال الموجودة في الضمانة.

لكي تتم عملية الإطلاق، يجب على جميع الأطراف الموافقة على:

* إلغاء الصفقة: في هذه الحالة يحصل كل طرف على استرداد ما كان قد إيداعه سابقًا في الضمانة.
* أو إتمام الصفقة: في هذه الحالة يتم دفع كل طرف حقه.

في حالة وجود خلاف، يتم تقديم الرهان للتصويت من قبل مجتمع الرهانات. عملية التصويت تستمر لمدة أسبوع.

يمكن استخدام الرهانات في عدد لا حصر له من الحالات حيث لا يثق الأطراف المشاركة في الصفقة تمامًا في بعضهم البعض: التجارة الإلكترونية، خدمات النقل، التوصيل، مشاريع البناء، إلخ.
